2020 — Residential — New Build

Glebelands Road

Prestwich, Manchester

Scroll

Glebelands Road is a proposal for a small residential building containing five apartments, developed for a constrained backland plot in Prestwich. The design process moved between physical model studies, site photographs and rendered visualisations to test massing, access and daylight.

This site photo shows the existing red-brick house on the street frontage, with the driveway and side access route leading back into the development plot. Mature trees and tight boundaries define the setting and heavily influence the form.

Physical model showing house and proposed apartment building in one site model Physical model perspective with existing house in front and new stepped form behind

These model views set out the relationship between old and new. The existing house remains as the front marker on the street, while the new apartment block sits behind as a stepped composition of simple volumes around a central access spine.

Physical section model of proposed apartment building with stacked rooms

The sectional model exposes how the apartments stack through the building. Large framed openings, recessed balcony zones and split-level internal relationships are visible in this cut-through view.

Physical model street elevation showing scale between existing and proposed buildings

From this long elevation model shot, the new volume reads as a lower, contemporary counterpoint to the taller Victorian house. Boundary walls and fences maintain privacy while preserving a clear route into the rear site.

Daytime render of timber-clad apartment building with deep window openings

This frontal render shows the developed facade: a timber-clad envelope with deep glazed openings and projecting balcony boxes. The composition is intentionally irregular to break down the scale of a five-home block.

Wider daytime render of the apartment building in tree-lined setting Low-angle render from gravel forecourt toward apartment building

The wider view demonstrates the landscape context, with tree canopy and boundary fencing enclosing the site. Ground-level routes and external thresholds are kept simple so the building mass and window rhythm remain the focus.

Seen from the forecourt, the project reads as a compact cluster of stacked homes. The gravel surface and recessed lower openings emphasize how the building sits back within the plot.

Night render of apartment building with internal coloured lighting

The night render highlights occupancy and depth: internal lighting reveals the section through the rooms, while the dark facade and illuminated openings create a more compact, grounded street presence after dusk.
